Glenfield Intermediate Testimonial

Glenfield Intermediate School Principal discussing the schools’ new artificial turf sports courts.

Schools across New Zealand are increasingly turning to artificial turf sports courts as a way to future-proof their facilities, reduce maintenance costs, and provide students with safe, durable, and versatile play areas. Glenfield Intermediate, located on Auckland’s North Shore, is the latest school to invest in high-quality sports turf — and the results are impressive.

In this exclusive video testimonial, Principal Mark Whitford shares his thoughts on the transformation of the school’s outdoor courts, all completed by Teamturf, New Zealand’s leading artificial turf specialists.

Glenfield Intermediate serves a diverse community of learners. Like many schools, they wanted to create a modern, engaging, and resilient outdoor space where students could enjoy a variety of sports and recreational activities.

The Project Scope

Teamturf worked closely with the school to design and install new multi-use artificial turf courts. The project involved: Repairing and removing some areas of the old hard court that had cracked and deteriorated and had become a safety concern, and installing a high-performance sports turf across the various play areas adding customised line markings for multiple sports codes required.

Why Schools Are Choosing Artificial Turf Sports Courts

Durability and Low Maintenance – Traditional asphalt and grass courts can be expensive to maintain. Cracks, puddles, and muddy patches often make them unusable for weeks at a time. Artificial turf sports surfaces, by contrast, are designed to withstand heavy daily use, regardless of weather conditions. With proper installation, turf courts can last over a decade, providing excellent long-term value.

Safety for Students – Artificial turf provides better shock absorption than concrete or asphalt. For schools, this means fewer injuries and a safer environment for children to run, jump, and play. Multi-Sport Versatility – Modern turf courts can be customised with line markings for multiple sports, including: Netball, Basketball, Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball, Kiorahi, Tapuae etc . This flexibility allows schools to get the maximum use out of their play space.

All-Weather Usability – One of the biggest frustrations for schools is outdoor courts that become unusable after heavy rain. Artificial turf systems are engineered with excellent drainage and permeability, ensuring courts dry quickly and can be used all year round.

In his video testimonial, Principal Mark Whitford highlights the positive impact of the new turf courts. He notes the immediate benefits for students, including improved playability, greater enthusiasm for sport, and the ability to use the courts in virtually any weather. He also acknowledges the professionalism of the Teamturf crew, who worked efficiently to deliver a high-quality result within agreed timeframes.

Benefits

Glenfield Intermediate Has Experienced Increased Student Participation – Since the installation, more students are actively engaging in sports during school hours and breaks. The inviting look and feel of the turf encourages participation, helping to foster a stronger sporting culture at Glenfield Intermediate.

Greater Variety of Sports -With multiple line markings, the courts are no longer limited to a single sport. Students can transition between basketball, netball, and tennis without issue, making the space more dynamic and adaptable.

Reduced Maintenance Costs – The school’s facilities team no longer has to deal with repairing cracks or repainting faded court lines every year. Artificial turf surfaces are easy to maintain with periodic brushing and cleaning, freeing up resources for other priorities.

Year-Round Play – Even during Auckland’s wet winters, the courts remain usable thanks to excellent drainage. Students can continue their physical education programmes and sports practices without disruption.
