Bailey Road School – Multi-Stage Playground & Sports Court Transformation

Bailey Road School has been transformed through a three-stage surfacing programme, turning multiple underutilised asphalt areas into vibrant, safe and highly functional recreational spaces for students.

Across the project, Teamturf delivered a combination of sports surfacing, playground safety systems, and custom SignGrass® design elements, creating a cohesive all-weather environment for play, sport and learning.

Project Snapshot

  • Client: Bailey Road School
  • Location: Auckland, New Zealand
  • Total Area: Approx. 2,000sqm
  • Project Type: Multi-stage school playground and sports upgrade
  • Scope: Sports court, junior playground, bespoke inclusive play zones
  • Systems Used: Probounce COOLPlus®, ProPlay® shockpad, Evergreen turf, Coolplay coloured turf, SignGrass® elements
  • Delivery: Three staged installations over multiple visits

The Challenge

Bailey Road School had several existing asphalt areas that were:

  • Underutilised for learning and recreation
  • Lacking safety surfacing for younger students
  • Visually uninspiring and fragmented
  • Not optimised for all-weather use or multi-sport activity

The school required a phased transformation approach that would allow upgrades over time while maintaining usability across the site.

The Solution

Teamturf designed a staged redevelopment plan that progressively converted multiple asphalt zones into a connected, purpose-built recreational environment.

Each stage was tailored to specific age groups and usage needs, ensuring the final outcome delivered both sporting performance and inclusive play opportunities.

Stage 1 – Multi-Use Sports Court

The first stage delivered the school’s main sports court:

  • Over 430sqm of Probounce COOLPlus® surface
  • Designed for durability and all-season performance
  • Suitable for a wide range of school sports and activities
  • High-performance surface supporting daily use

This created a dedicated space for structured sport and physical education.

Stage 2 – Junior Playground Upgrade

The second stage focused on the junior play area:

  • Installation of recycled ProPlay® shockpad system
  • Finished with hardwearing Evergreen synthetic turf
  • Designed as a soft-fall compliant, safe play environment
  • Seamless integration with adjacent sports field areas

This stage significantly improved safety and accessibility for younger students.

Stage 3 – Bespoke Multi-Use Play Zones

The final stage delivered a visually striking and highly interactive space:

  • Bright pink and purple custom sports court
  • Over 1,050sqm of total upgraded surfacing across the project
  • Custom SignGrass® elements, including:
    • Hopscotch
    • Snakes and ladders
    • Chess board
  • Embedded school logo within court design

This stage focused on creativity, inclusivity, and structured play opportunities for all age groups.

Project Outcome

The staged delivery approach enabled Bailey Road School to progressively transform its outdoor areas into a:

  • Cohesive, multi-functional recreational environment
  • Safe and durable all-weather play space
  • Visually engaging and branded school landscape
  • Flexible space supporting both structured sport and creative play

The result is a modern outdoor learning environment that supports physical activity, social development, and school pride.
